The Mayor of Cambridge visited Cambridge Leadership College, Cambridge’s newest international Sixth Form College, to open the Going2Uni Fair. Now in its eighth year, the Going2Uni event gives international students the opportunity to meet with representatives from some of the best universities in the UK and discuss the issues relevant to them.
Cambridge’s Mayor George Pippas opened the Going2Uni Fair at Cambridge Leadership College today and described the challenges he faced, as an international student, in Cambridge 40 years ago. He recalled the difficulty he had in studying in a totally new language and likened himself to Cambridge Leadership College’s own students. He told CLC students “you’re just like me” and empathised with their experience.
Councillor Pippas completed his primary and secondary education in Cyprus. After finishing school he joined the army where he served three years as an officer at the rank of a lieutenant. He came to Cambridge in 1977 and studied Engineering. For the past 40 years, Cambridge has been home.
Elected Cambridge City Mayor in May 2017 George Pippas’ role is to act as a representative and focal point of the community, as well as promoting the city and forging national and international links.
Former Member of Parliament Julian Huppert welcomed the university exhibitors as well as the international student attendees. He commented on the importance of international students to the wider Cambridge community not just from an economic viewpoint but for the valuable contribution they make to the dynamic and diverse community that is Cambridge.
Cambridge Leadership College Principal, Tom Cassidy, addressed the fair and noted the importance of internationalism and an international mindset, values that this new college embodies. He welcomed the fair exhibitors and attendees to the College which opened just this September.
